In 2008 we began offering full pillars to be used, and controlled, exclusively by the police, giving them a chance to reach the public in their local town/city centres. In this way the police can provide valuable information: safety or important local police contact details or information about issues, like drug programmes, ASBO's...
Canterbury Police Pillar Launch (8th February 2011)

and believe they're helping to improve their area" ~ Neil Oakden M.D.
We have a large catalogue of publicity campaigns, which seem to divide in to 8 main categories
Government programmes
– Justice seen
Behavioural changing
– Don’t drink, lock your doors etc
Shock and awe
– Images of the results of binge drinking and the like
A source of information
– Local contact details, drug help lines and so on
Increasing the perception of police presence
– Life size images of police
Local achievements
– Crime reduction statistics, cases solved etc
Community support
– Engaging with the local community
ASBO support
– Pictures of offenders
Every town has their own issues to tackle, and to resolve, and this is an important communication tool to help, by keeping the public informed about improvements etc.
These pillars are maintained to the same high standard as our "normal advertising PIP's", except that these are for police use only. The police are in charge of what exactly gets displayed and are not used for any commercial advertising.

Planning note: The installation of the Police Information Pillars usually falls under class 1 deemed consent “functional advertisements by public bodies”. This permits planners to issue consent (presuming the location does not offend any highways regulation) without the need for a formal planning application, and is therefore normally quickly completed.
